What pphysiotherapist do
What do physiotherapist really do? This is a really interesting question to answer. As a physiotherapist with over 20 years of experience in this profession I think I can answer this question.
Firstly, physiotherapy core knowledge is about improving movements in disease condition or when patients are sick. Health conditions often present with decrease mobility, muscle weakness and pain. Physiotherapist will aim to increase patients. mobility. Mobility aid such as walking stick, zimmer frame, elbow crutches wheelchair etc can be provided and patients taught how to mobilise with theses mobility aids.
Pain iis another key problem physiotherapist used their knowledge to solve. Patients often present with back pain, knee pain, neck pain, shoulder pain etc soft tissue mobilisation, massage, exercises, postural correction, TENS machine, wheat bag etc can be used to decrease pain.
patient education about their health condition is another key part of physiotherapy. Knowledge about health conditions diagnosis prognosis, treatment outcomes etc are taught. Short and long term treatments goals are jointly designed with the patient.
Physiotherapist also connect patient to other health professionals based on their health needs. Support groups in the community can also be linked to patients. Physiotherapist do all these and more for the betterment of their patients.

Below knee amputation and physiotherapy rehab
Below knee amputation is quite common amputation seen in the United Kingdom. It may be due to cancer or accident leading poor blood supply to affected lower limb in which surgery as not being effective to restore blood supply. Doctor, patients and their families will jointly make the decision to have the amputation.
patient will be referred for physiotherapy post amputation and for prosthetic limb. Rehabilitation will start with patient taught how to care for the below knee stump. Correct bed transfer and bed to chair transfer using banana board or standing with zimmer frame on the remaining lower limb and pivoting into wheelchair will be taught.
Once tthe wound as healed, patient will be taught how to mobilise with temporary prosthetic leg with the parallel bars and gradually progress from mobilising holding two bars to one and to walking unaided in the physio gym. Strengthening exercises to the lower limb will also be taught.
phantom limb pain is experienced by most amputee inwhich they have sensation of pain in the amputated limb. This is treated with TENS machine and education of the patient that the brain centre concerning the amputated limb is still active and that’s is why they have phantom pain.
Patient will be taught mibiling outdoor with the prosthetic limb and how to adapt to their life now post amputation.

wheeled Zimmer Frame
wheeled Zimmer frame are mobility aid given to people with balance problems. It has two wheels at the front for ease of movement and should not be lifted when walking with it.
Zimmer frame on the other hand does not have wheels in front. Both wheeled zimmer frame and zimmer frame are effective for preventing falls and improving balance. It keeps people upright when walking with it.
The hheight of the zimmer frame should be adjusted up to the hand wrist level. The zimmer frame should be moved forward and patient walk into the imaginary line between the back to legs/rod.
